Wynken, Blynken and Nod

I've been *trying* to read to the baby every day. I read that at this point, she can hear everything we say and can actually retain information. The book I'm reading also said that if you read the same story every day, the baby will actually be soothed by the words when she is born.

So I decided to read to hear the book my parents read to me as a kid, which apparently I was OBSESSED with.

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod
by Eugene Field

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night

Sailed off in a wooden shoe --

Sailed off on a river of crystal light,

Into a sea of dew

"Where are you going, and what do you wish?"

The old moon asked the three

"We have come to fish for the herring fish

That live in the beautiful sea;

Nets of silver and gold have we!"

Said
Wynken,
Blynken,

and Nod.

The old moon laughed and sang a song,

As they rocked in the wooden shoe,

And the wind that sped them all night long

Ruffled the waves of dew

The little stars were the herring fish

That lived in the beautiful sea --

"Now cast your nets wherever you wish --

Never afeard are we";

So cried the stars to the fisherman three:

Wynken,
Blynken,

and Nod.

All night long their nets they threw

To the stars in the twinkling foam --

Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe

Bringing the fisherman home;

'Twas all so pretty a sail it seemed

As if it could not be,

And some folks thought 'twas a dream they'd dreamed

Of sailing that beautiful sea --

But I shall name you the fishermen three:

Wynken,
Blynken,

and Nod.

Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes,
And Nod is a little head,

And the wooden shoes that sailed the skies

Is the wee one's trundle-bed

So shut your eyes while mother sings

Of wonderful sights that be,

And you shall see the beautiful things

As you rock in the misty sea,

Where the old shoe rocked the fisherman three:

Wynken,
Blynken,

and Nod.

23 Weeks!!

Incidentally, Aryn decided to celebrate her 23rd gestation week by waking me up 10 minutes before the alarm clock by kicking me repeatedly, and using my bladder as a pillow. I can't lie... it's a great way to wake up! I just wish it was 10 minutes later ;)

Nothing else exciting happened this week. We started pre-natal classes on Wednesdays from 7-9pm. We both really enjoyed it, and our first class we learned a lot of stuff - and I thought I knew a LOT already! I found out that my frequent nose bleeds and bleeding gums were all quite common, which is comforting. I know a girl in the class, so we already have someone we know so yay! Next week we get to watch a video of a live birth... I'm really nervous about the video hahaha.

But seriously, other than that nothing else is new or exciting with us. I read that if Aryn was born today, she'd have an 85% chance of surviving such an early birth, which makes me very happy - not that I think I'm going into pre-term labour or anything, but it's just comforting to know. We've also bought a few more things - a new playpen that works as a bassinet when Aryn is first born, and just a few other things. I can't wait to start decorating the baby room! I have to get rid of that massive king bed first though haha. It's all coming together! All we need now, is a baby!

22 Weeks!!

Only 18 to go!!

I can't express how much I love this part of the pregnancy. I feel great, I'm tired but not overly tired, I can still sleep most of the night, I enjoy my exercise and walks with Bauer, and the feeling of her little feet kicking is the most amazing feeling I've ever felt!!! She's got me in the ribs once or twice to which I didn't really enjoy, but all in all the kicking has been the most magical thing ever. Ryan still hasn't felt her kick but I'm sure he will soon. I just have to make him come to me when she's being feisty!!

We're also thisclose to deciding on a name. Naturally, we're going to wait until we meet her for the FINAL decision, but I think we're going with.... (drum roll, please)....

Aryn Linda Geremia (pronounced "ERIN")

We love the meaning behind "Aryn" (it's "RYAN" mixed up... I suggested Nedise for a boy but I was vetoed quite quickly) and it's the only name we both LOVE and agree on. Plus, it's unique (Isabella is the #1 name this year because of stupid Twilight so we weren't 100% on Isabelle).

Ryan thinks that her nickname should still be Gert (or Gertie) but I've taken to calling her Aryn. And every time I look at her little profile in the ultrasound photos, I see her as an Aryn even more!

I've also gone nuts buying little things here and there. We've gotten some clothes as gifts (thanks Auntie Shirly!) but I still have to buy something every time I'm out it seems. When we found out we were having a little girl I went and bought her a pink elephant. I can't wait to decorate her bedroom!! We're going to start sanding and painting her new furniture (which used to be my furniture!) this weekend hopefully and I can't wait to see this room complete!! Next step: get rid of the king bed and put in a crib! YAY!!!

18 weeks to go... or... 126 DAYS TO GO!!

Thank Goodness It's a Girl

Otherwise I'd end up having a very feminine boy.

Today I discovered the Broadway Station on Sirius Radio. I've decided the baby would enjoy it (considering she can hear everything we say and listen to now. I'm going to start reading to her as well!). She's going to loooooove Broadway!!!

Oh and I'm 21 weeks today!!! Only 19 to go!!!!

Drum Roll, Please....

It's a...

GIRL!!!

... I guess we can't call her "Bruno" anymore.... for now on, we shall refer to her as "Gert".
As in..

Ross: Oh, you-you sure? Okay... Okay. So what’s uh, what’s your name?

Fat Girl: Gert!

Ross: That’s......... that’s pretty.

The Vegan Betty Crocker Cookbook

I don't consider myself Vegan because... well... I drink milk (albeit, organic) and I eat eggs (again, they are free-range and from a farmer just outside of Strathmore). But, I watch VERY carefully what I eat and will always pick the most animal-friendly alternative if possible.

Today, Peta announced a blog where a woman took the idea of the movie Julie & Julia and took it to the next level: by going through the entire Betty Crocker cookbook and making every recipe VEGAN.

Now, I understand I can make some changes - adding regular milk instead of soy milk - but the idea is extremely intriguing. I plan on tackling much of these recipes!

Pregnancy Brain

So last week on Facebook I mentioned that I left the deep freeze door open for like 26 hours. Wide open. Had NO clue, as I was sitting upstairs working away and taking Bauer for a walk. Apparently electricity is free to me.

Today, Pregnancy Brain hit me again. I went to Tim Horton's to meet with a client. When I left, I drove around town dropping off Newsy Neighbors to everyone who advertises with us and then I went home. I took Bauer for a quick walk, then a friend came over to take me out for lunch. As we're about to leave, I looked high and low for my purse. I seriously couldn't find it ANYWHERE. I checked all the places I'd normally leave it - the car, the entry way to our house, the backs of the chairs in our kitchen, the bathroom, our bedroom, under the blankets (??), the closet - EVERYWHERE.

Then my phone rings.

"Hello Denise? This is Lydia at Tim Horton's. You left your purse here."

*sigh*
Duh.

HALF WAY THERE!!!!

Today marks my 20-week!!!!! I'm halfway there!!
(or halfway done, depending on how you want to look at it, hehe)

And we have an ultrasound date: May 13th at 8am. Nice and early, getting to drive during rush hour. Yay!!! I can't WAIT to find out what this baby is. I'm going to drink lots of water, a glass of juice and bring a granola bar to chow down on to make sure this baby is hyper and active so we can get a good look at its goods.

Dear LORD please let us find out what this baby is!! OLV! OLV!! OLV!!!

I don't want to post any belly pics (sorry Connie!!). But I will soon hehe.

Nothing new to report... I slept SO well last night (most likely due to the fact that Ryan is in San Francisco hahaha). I felt great today! I only woke up twice last night - once to go to the bathroom, once to let Bauer go to the bathroom (darn dog woke up at the same time Ryan's alarm clock normally goes off!! Grrr!). I can't wait to sleep in again tomorrow!!!

'Til next time!!

Names

Ryan and I have been throwing around a LOT of names for this baby. We have it narrowed down but we're afraid to tell anyone our ideas for a number of reasons:

1) We don't want our top names to be vetoed by anyone

2) EVERYONE knows someone with each name who they don't like. Say we pick the name (as an example) George. Then we hear "ohh I went to school with a George and he was such a jerk!" then the infamous words "you can't name your baby that!"

3) We don't want anyone to steal it. I have already had my other #1 choice names stolen and I don't want anyone else to read this blog and steal my names.

Yet, at the same time, I want to share them so that we have people knowing our names and knowing not to pick our names. We're at a standstill.

So.... I'm still a sucker for knowing what you think. You may vote if you so well choose to. Now here's the kicker: a few of the names on here are NOT on our actual list. They're just there to throw you off the trail ;) muahahahaha!!

But please: if you are pregnant and reading this blog (and you know me!)... PLEASE DON'T TAKE ANY OF THE NAMES ON OUR LIST!!!!!!!

I can feel Bruno!!

For the past 4 days or so, I've been really feeling the baby move around. It's the most magical feeling ever. I can't even express how cool it is to feel something alive moving inside of you. It makes the whole experience feel much more "real" and reassures me now that I no longer have morning sickness that everything is fine.

Yay!!!

The Birth

Well, it's pretty 'graphic' info to post about your child's birth, but I'm weird and like to remember what my baby's births were like. So, with no further ado, here is my birth story for Lucas!

On May 15, I had my weekly doctor's appointment. I had had 2 weeks of prodromal labour (pre-labour) and I was sick of the contractions and up-all-nights due to this annoying side-effect. Not to mention, my PUPPPS was getting worse, I couldn't breathe out of my nose at all, and I was exhausted from being pregnant. I was DONE.

So I asked Dr. Muller to strip my membranes. He said it has a 50/50 chance of working; I took my chances. When he checked me, I was 3 cm dilated, and baby was "very low" (to the point that he could feel his head!). When he was done stripping my membranes, I was 3.5 cm. I started getting serious contractions as I was walking out of the doctor's office.

At home, I had 15-minute-to-45-minute apart contractions until 10pm. Then, they stopped. Completely. I had a shower at 10 and no more contractions. I was not impressed. I even cried!

I woke up at 1am with one big contraction. It hurt enough to wake me up and force me to go to the bathroom. I went back to bed, and woke up at 1:45 with another one. 45 minutes apart - nothing to worry about. But, then I had another one, about 10 minutes later, and strong enough that I couldn't stand through it. By 2:15, they were 5 minutes apart and consistent. So I called my parents to come watch Aryn, I woke Ryan up (yes, in that order) and we got in the vehicle. The drive to the hospital was awful.

We got to the hospital at 2:40am.

*Side note: I can't believe how different my labour with Lucas was to Aryn. With Aryn, my water broke as I got up from bed at 8:30am, after a great night's sleep. Contractions started at 10am, after a nice relaxing morning of a shower and getting ready to go to the hospital. Then I had non-stop contractions for 12 hours. Literally, they never stopped for a second. It was awful.

With Lucas, I'd get a contraction, then it would stop and I could breathe. Then I'd get another. It was how I expected labour to be when I was pregnant with Aryn.

The doctor checked me, telling me I was the only patient in "active labour" at the hospital, but lots of women were there in not-serious-labour. He then did the internal check and I was 3cm. Yes. I closed up 1/2 a cm!! I got mad at him because the contractions were so bad.

They ended up giving me an IV because I had asked for Fentanyl (I'm allergic to morphine). Why no one can do an IV the first time is beyond me. I think the IV pain hurt more than the contractions! I was cursing the poor nurses who were trying to get the IV in. They did get it in, but they never gave me any Fentanyl.

He came back after about an hour and I was 5cm and the contractions were closer together and stronger. I started on the gas to make it through each contraction. The doctor asked me about drugs and I actually considered an epidural! Ryan convinced me not to, thank God.

This labour had no music. No standing. No swaying. No massage (Ryan tried massaging my shoulders once - because I NEEDED that with Aryn's labour - and I told him to stop touching me hahaha)

I laboured in triage until about 5:30am, when they finally got a room for me - like I said, it was super busy that morning! It took me about 10 minutes to walk to the room 50 feet from my triage room because of the contractions. I finally got in there, they laid me back down on the bed (again, I couldn't lay down when I was in labour with Aryn - I stood the whole time. This time, I HAD to lay down). They had to do another internal. The doctor ended up breaking my water (5:45am). Then I asked for the fentanyl because it hurt so bad. The nurse literally was putting the needle into the IV bag when I yelled out that I had to push. Then my body started pushing. The nurse yelled at me to open my legs so they could look. I told her no (I didn't want to move) and she said "you have no choice!" So I did, then she told Ryan to press the "big red button" and yelled at the doctor to come deliver.

One mama push later, and Lucas was out. Literally one push.

He was born at 6:18am, weighing 6lbs 13oz, and 19 3/4" long!

We were supposed to be in the hospital for 2-5 days due to the situs inversus. The NICU came and took Lucas away quite quickly after he was born to assess him. It was a very confusing, frustrating conversation with a woman who did not speak very good English, telling me that they are going to keep him for 24+ hours and they will give him formula if they see fit. She was saying this to me as they were stitching me up (3 tiny 1st degree tears) and I was meeting my son. She even kept telling me they would give him formula after I said I wanted him to be exclusively breastfed. I was about to refuse NICU, until another nurse came in (who spoke English) and agreed that everything we wanted would happen. So Ryan went with Lucas to the NICU while they cleaned me up and got me ready to go.

Lucas ended up spending a total of 5 hours in NICU, instead of 2-5 days. He was perfectly healthy, and there were so many not-healthy babies there that they did not see any reason to keep him there. They gave him an ultrasound, confirmed the situs inversus, but stated that he's fine. The only thing we need to watch for is that he has a vein (name?) that runs from your leg to your heart. His crosses his heart so it *could* be an issue when he's older, and will most likely need ultrasounds throughout his life to make sure he's ok. But there's nothing anyone can do about it. So we may not have our star hockey player, but he's going to be amazing at whatever he does in his life. And I can't wait to see what he does in his life!!

We got to go home the very next day (again, instead of the 2-5 day recommended stay!). I was healing great, Lucas was happy and healthy, nursing was going fantastic (and still is!) and everything is fantastic!

Now for sleep....
